Killing Joke: A Critic at Large

Killing Joke: A Critic at Large

A spectacularly written article, by David Denby at the New Yorker, covering the Cohen Brothers' body of work, but focusing on what he feels went wrong in their telling of No Country for Old Men. I disagree with his take on the movie, finding it to require more searching than he seems willing to put into the movie. Specifically, I loved that the death scene which he craves, was entirely non-existent. That vacancy gives the me a feeling of pointlessness that sums up the whole story better than any synopsis.

Radiohead: 01 and 10

Radiohead's In Rainbows has been all the news since it was released just over a month ago. Making news not only for being a pay-what-you-feel digital download with no DRM, but also for being a phenomenal album, and a follow-up to 1997's OK Computer.

Now, there's a whole to-do about Thom Yorke's ideas behind the ones and zeroes that seem to permeate the release, and it's sister album. But, Puddlegum turned one of those theories into a playlist, and it's really good. Take the 3 minutes and make the playlist, and just enjoy. I know it'll make the rush hour drive home much nicer.

Well, let's all go be bummed.

From today's news on placeboworld.co.uk:

PLACEBO PART COMPANY WITH DRUMMER STEVE HEWITT

Placebo have parted company with drummer of 11 years, Steve Hewitt, due to personal and musical differences.

Brian Molko commented "Being in a band is very much like being in a marriage, and in couples - in this case a triple - people can grow apart over the years. To say that you don't love your partner anymore is inaccurate, considering all that you've been through and achieved together. There simply comes a point when you realize that you want different things from your relationship and that you can no longer live under the same roof, so to speak."

The split is amicable and a sad time for both parties. Steve Hewitt replaced Robert Schultzberg behind the drum kit in 1996 whilst the band were promoting Placebo’s eponymous debut album and went on to record the following 4 studio albums ‘Without You I’m Nothing’, ‘Black Market Music’, ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ and most recently ‘Meds’.

Placebo have just returned from the USA where they were part of the high profile ‘Projekt Revolution Tour’ alongside Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance. The band are now taking a well earned break.

Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal will begin work on Placebo’s 6th studio album next Spring and are in no rush to find an immediate replacement for Steve.

Bummer. Best of luck to Steve in whatever he does. And to Brian and Stephan, you guys will still put together something amazing.

Radiohead sells their new album for tips.

I swear to god, this is exactly why Radiohead rocks so goddamn hard.

Radiohead decided that they didn't need a record label any more. Actually, they didn't really need CDs, but they kept 'em around for the people who want them. And what's more, they didn't really know what to charge for the album they're dropping on Oct 10, so they left it up to the consumers - each and every consumer who buys their new album - to decide. In Rainbows, the band's seventh full-length release will have no set price. Instead, you pay what you feel is appropriate when you checkout on Radiohead's website. Awesome.

Hotel Chevalier

It's out, and available for free download from iTunes. Rock. You should probably be warned, supposedly there's an "extended nude scene" so you might not want to watch this at work.

Rock God

Stefan Olsdal of Placebo at the April 10th, 2007 show in Philly (Theatre of Living Arts).
Stef can rock harder than most, and while barely saying a word, he casts a presence that dwarfs even his own 6' 4" stature.

This is the first in a seris of concert photos I'll be posting over the next few days.

He laughed much louder than everyone else. And he smiled bigger. And, even outside, he could light up a room. There's not many people you get to say that about in a lifetime. He was a good one.

It was chillier than he remembered, and the bright sun overhead did little to warm his bones. The old man sighed as he took his first step, but couldn't help laughing at the younger ones ahead.

She said that the cool air kept her there. That every time she tried to leave, another storm would roll in, and the electricity that the lighting injected into the air would trap her on the ground. She called the clouds "lead blankets," she called the city lights "fairies" and the honking horns and shouting voices were "lullabies." She called the spire "home" and named each raindrop.

As the emerging invaders' eyes adjusted to the light, they couldn't quite place what was wrong. It was as if the very strands of protein that composed their exoskeleton were not sitting right. It was as if they were totally out of their element.

discarded.

I had trouble waking up, that day. The sleep wouldn't fall from my eyes. Driving in to work, I had to remind myself to watch the road, and the coffee I'd made was not helping. It started to rain as I pulled into my normal parking spot, and the dull grey of everything was overwhelming.

sixth-grade dreams

cellophane and markers and latex paints. also, girls, rockets and racecars. it's funny how little things change.

sometimes we'd all skip class and sneak out through the boiler room

we knew it was wrong. that's what made it so much fun. or we'd sneak in right after school and make out. our parents used to go under the bleachers, but this was better. dirtier. our innocence didn't make it 'till 20. we didn't even give it a chance.
